Tattoo Aftercare
Keep bandage on for no longer than 2 hours.
After removing bandage, gently wash tattoo with fingertips under hot water with anti-bacterial non-scented liquid soap (Dial Gold liquid hand soap) .
After washing let air dry or pat gently with a clean paper towel.
If your tattoo is visibly dry, massage a very small amount of Aquaphor/unscented lotion into the tattoo.
Repeat this process 3-5 times a day for the next 2 weeks as needed.
If the tattoo looks glossy, you are using too much ointment/lotion which means your tattoo cannot breathe and will not heal properly.
Do NOT coat your tattoo in ointment/lotion.
Some recommended ointments are Aquaphor or Hustle Butter.
Some recommended lotions are Aveeno Oat fragrance-free, Nivea fragrance-free, and Lubirderm Daily Moisture fragrance-free.
NOT recommended: Vaseline, Tattoo Goo, A & D Ointment, or any petroleum based ointments.
Do NOT submerge tattooed area in water for at least 2 weeks. Showering is fine, only use finger tips and your unscented anti-bacteria soap in the shower. Note: washing your tattoo should be the last thing you wash before getting out of the shower.
Do NOT expose tattoo to sunlight until the healing process is complete.
Do NOT peel, pick, or itch your healing tattoo. Let scabbing or flaking fall off naturally. Failing to do so can result in an infection.
No soaking, swimming, tanning or shaving for at least 2 weeks after getting tattooed.
Once your tattoo is fully healed, remember to ALWAYS apply a minimum of 50 SPF sunscreen for preservation.
Tattoos are controlled open wounds. Keep them clean, keep them lightly moisturized.
If you have any concerns or questions about the healing of your fresh tattoo, do not hesitate to email your artist or contact your doctor.
Dermshield Aftercare
Both Nat and Jordan use Recovery brand Derm Shield bandage.
Leave the ‘second skin’ bandage on for 3-5 days. Do not leave on for more than 6 days. For Delicate Fine Line tattoos or tattoos in sensitive areas, the bandage should not stay on for more than 48 hours.
Fluid (blood/plasma/ink) will accumulate underneath the surface of the bandage and may create a bubble. The liquid will be dark, discolored, and opaque, that is normal.
If the fluid leaks out of the bandage or accumulates excessively, change Derm Shield after the first 12-24 hours after first applied.
ALWAYS make sure to have clean hands when caring for your tattoo. Both the tattoo and surrounding area should be cleaned with unscented antibacterial soap and water.
Pat dry with a CLEAN paper towel or air dry before reapplying your second sheet of Derm Shield with clean dry hands.
On the 6th day, remove the bandage under warm, running water, usually shower is best. By starting with one corner, slowly peel the bandage out and away from the tattoo, stretching the bandage gently off the skin until the Derm Shield lets up completely. ( Very similar to pulling off a Command Strip).
After the Derm Shield is removed, wash tattoo with clean fingertips, warm water, and unscented antibacterial soap. ( Dial Gold liquid hand soap is recommended).
Once clean, allow the tattoo and skin surrounding it to air dry or gently pat dry with a clean paper towel.
If extreme swelling, red bumps, discomfort, or extra redness occurs on the skin outside of the tattoo (but under and/or along the edge of the bandage) you may be having an allergic reaction or adhesive sensitivity. If this occurs: remove the bandage immediately, wash tattoo with bacterial soap, and apply a thin layer of unscented ointment/lotion over your tattoo.
Some slight redness and swelling is normal.
The Recovery Derm Shield may leave a thin red irritation mark where edges were (much like a band aid). This is common and it is up to you if you'd like to remove the bandage early. (Please note: if the redness appears to be getting worse or the tattoo is extremely itchy, removing the second skin immediately is recommended).
